Over £50 million of transport improvements one step closer
Major milestones in the programme to complete the ‘transport jigsaw’ in the West of England to tackle congestion in Weston-super-Mare and build a rapid transit route between Ashton Vale and Temple Meads via Bristol city centre have been achieved. Read more
Traffic flow improving in the West of England
In February 2010 this performance has been recognised by the DfT who have awarded an extra £800,000 to the Councils to use on tackling congestion. The award letter states that the funding is awarded to “areas that have significantly outperformed their (expected) trajectory”. This extra money is in addition to the £1 million that has previously been awarded for our performance in reducing congestion. Read more and see the Department for Transport information.
Congestion Delivery Plan updated - DfT say congestion down by 13% compared to 2005/6
The strangely named ‘Congestion Delivery Plan’ that sets out how congestion is being reduced has been updated and is available to read.
As Cllr Charles Gerrish, Chair of the Joint Transport Executive for the West of England Partnership says “Whilst the plan isn’t the most exciting read ever, what is says really does matter to all of us – everytime we go out of our homes we use the transport network. The West of England councils are working hard together to reduce congestion on our roads and the amount of carbon dioxide in our towns and cities. The more each of us thinks about the way we travel the more we can all help reduce congestion locally.”
The HomesWest Partnership: building more affordable housing
A housing partnership has broken all records in delivering more affordable homes for local people. HomesWest is a partnership of four housing associations - Knightstone, Sarsen, Somer and Sovereign - who were selected by West of England councils to deliver more affordable homes on new housing developments in the area. Waste disposal contract awarded by West of England Partnership
The four West of England councils will save £44 million over the next five years, and reduce the amount of biodegradable waste going to landfill by 75%, thanks to a waste management contract awarded to Dorset company New Earth Solutions. Read more
